Mauna Kea Beach Hotel celebrates its grand reopening next month, after more than two years and $150 million worth of repairs and renovation. The resort had been one of the higher-profile casualties of Hawaii’s 2006 earthquake, suffering structural damage and a collapsed concrete trellis.

Originally the brainchild of Laurance Rockefeller, and designed by architect Charles Bassett of firm Skidmore Owings and Merrill in 1965, the Mauna Kea was, at the time it opened, the most expensive hotel ever built, at $15 million, and garnered national attention for its singular design.

Owners Prince Resorts Hawaii took the downtime as an opportunity to update the hotel; architect John Hara has revamped the rooms to include ocean-view bathrooms and adding high-tech touches such as built-in media hubs where you can plug in your laptop or iPod.
