Weekend Picks : 6 Stylish Ideas For What to Eat, Shop and Do

Here's what Lei Chic is looking forward to this weekend.

Shop

Space Case

What: We may or may not be total sci-fi nerds (hint: we are!), so we get especially excited when our favorite genre has a moment in fashion. Enter the new H&M Studio Autumn/Winter 2015 collection, which hit stores yesterday. The totally cool blend of futuristic and retro aesthetics incorporates earthy, ’70s-esque colors such as rust and olive and cool, space-age-y styles such as padded boots and quilted parkas.

Details: How out-of-this-world are those ombre sweater and leather overalls?

Eat

Fall To It

What: Harvest season is upon us and that means, A: It's New York Fashion Week, and B: tons of fall dishes we can’t wait to get onto our plates and into our bellies. Here’s one great way to do that: The Moana Surfrider is launching the first in a series of monthly wine events, this month featuring wines from Napa’s Backstage Winery. Munch on a special four-course meal with delicacies such as prosciutto-crusted papaya “shots” and Kona-coffee cheesecake while you sip on wines. We don’t even miss summer.
When: Available Sept. 1219
Where: 2365 Kalākaua Ave.
Details: $100 per person. Call 921-4600 to make reservations.

Beauty Call

What: Despite the heat wave, it’s almost fall. You know what that means: a whole new season of beauty trends! Get in the know at the Neiman Marcus Project Beauty event this Saturday, where you can check out a cosmetics and fashion presentation telling you what’s going to be hot through fall. Your reservation fee even goes toward any beauty purchases you make during the event, so you have no excuse not to stock up.
When: Saturday, Sept. 12, 11 a.m.
Where: Neiman Marcus, Ala Moana Center
Details: $25 per person. Fee goes toward a $25 gift card to use on beauty purchases at the event. Reserve your seat at 948-7333.

Read

Hey, Dune

What: You’ve heard of sci-fi, but have you heard of cli-fi, aka climate-based fiction? This trend in literature and films (think Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake and even Mad Max: Fury Road) seems like the current big thing but, really, it’s been around for a while. Take Dune, the classic Frank Herbert novel (and creepy David Lynch movie) that turns 50 this year. The sustainability and ecoconscious themes are still—perhaps even more—relevant today, so it’s definitely worth a read, as is this article from Flavorwire that examines these concepts in the novel. Sorry, Netflix. We’ll be sticking our nose in a book this weekend.
Where: flavorwire.com
Details: Buy the collector’s edition of Dune here for $18.

Minnie Me

What: Alexa Chung. Victoria Beckham. Minnie Mouse? She may not be the first gal to come to mind when you think of fashionistas, but this new Minnie-tastic Instagram is just adorable enough to change your mind. The vibrant, cheery feed claims to be the official Instagram account for all thing Minnie-inspired, and our little Disney-loving hearts could not be happier.

Details: Polka-dot lovers, rejoice! No one does spots like Miss Mouse.

Attend

No Act

What: Comedy with scripts? Funny. Comedy without scripts? Potentially even funnier. Or at least, it’s an experiment we totally want to see for ourselves, so we’ll make sure to check out Think Fast and It’s Not Wolves’ improv-based comedy show at Ong King Art Center this weekend. The best part is that attendees get to be part of the action, as the actors will draw from audience suggestions as they move through the piece.
When: Friday, Sept. 11, 7:30–9:30 p.m.
Where: 184 N. King St.
Details: $10 at the door or online.
