It’s no surprise this video has received 460,000 views and more than 18,000 shares on Facebook since April 25.

An encounter like this is something most people don’t see in their lifetimes. Filmed just off the coast of Maui, Alex Werjefelt, the local cinematographer behind the video, captured the interaction on film last year. He uploaded the video to Facebook this year. “I have filmed countless hours of whales and dolphins, but this was perhaps the most captivating encounter between the two,” he said in an email.

Werjefelt, a fisherman and diver, and his team, Tom Ciletti and Ossian Nichols, were filming the dolphins when the humpback whales arrived to play. Revealing the playful and intelligent nature of these marine animals, Werjefelt hopes that people will gain a greater appreciation for them.

This video is part of the Life in the Hawaiian Islands online series which began filming in 2006, but hasn’t been published till this year. He says the best is yet to come, with more videos featuring animal interactions and nature, in Hawaiʻi, ready to make their way onto your newsfeed.
