Vote for Your Favorite Canned Goods Sculptures Built by Local Architects

The annual Canstruction fundraiser is virtual this year, so you can see what architects have made out of cans of Vienna sausage and vote for your favorite from home.

Pokémon characters, King Kamehameha and even the Hokūleʻa have all been captured in canned-good glory for the American Institute for Architects Honolulu’s annual Canstruction fundraiser. But I’m pretty sure this is the first year we’ve ever seen a giant mask made out of cans of Vienna sausage.

It’s an appropriate entry for the first virtual Canstruction competition. Usually, local teams build their larger-than-life sculptures in a shopping center; people who bring a canned good to can then vote for their favorites. The event has raised 402,571 pounds of food over the past 14 years.

In 2020, no surprise, that has changed. Instead, four teams were given more than 500 cans and one hour to execute mini designs. But you can still help pick the winners. Go online to see a time lapse video of the teams building their masterpieces and cast one vote for every dollar you donate to the food bank. The biggest winner will earn the People’s Choice Award and bragging rights for a year.

Voting is open through Aug. 28.
