Valentine’s Day Ideas for Every Type of Date

How to celebrate with your BFF, your BF and yourself.

Lumiere, candlestick, and Fifi, feather duster.
Buffy, vampire slayer and Angel, vampire.
Bert, whatever he is, and Ernie, the, er … orange version of that?

We know that true love doesn’t always look like this little picture of perfection. Your Valentine may be an ass, an ogre or both (hey, it worked out for Fiona, right?).

Luckily, in this day and age, in a city we heart as hard as we do, there are date nights for every form of lovebuggery. That means every form of lovers, whether they be Barbie-and-Ken-caliber boos, frightfully good mates like Sully and Mike Wazowski, or you, yourself and you celebrating some Me Time.

In any event, it’s going to be an extra lovely day.

Rub It In

He’s tense from work. You’re tense from always having to walk in those heels every day. Give both of yourselves a little TLC from a pro and splurge on a couple’s massage. You both get pampered, you’re naked—what’s not to love? The best part is lots of spas have Valentine’s Day specials, so take advantage of some of the sweet deals, such as at Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Mandara Spa, where a couple’s lomi lomi massage is $199, or at the Hyatt’s Na Ho‘ola Spa, where booking a couples massage includes champagne, chocolates and candles.

Fire It Up

Get more hands-on with a gift certificate to CookSpace at the Ward Village Shops. How cute is it seeing her do her best Julia Childs impression or him try to figure out the difference between paprika and harissa? Plus, you know the way to someone’s heart is through his or her stomach. Some upcoming workshop topics include pasta making, bread making, soups, Chinese New Year’s food and more.

Cheers To You

Have a proper girls’ day out with one of the best girly events invented: afternoon tea. At the Moana Surfrider’s Veranda, tea service is from noon to 2 p.m. on Valentine’s Day and includes special “Day of Love” treats from pastry chef Nanako Perez-Nava. Think red velvet madeleines, guava mousse cake, pineapple cheesecake and raspberry lychee macaroons. Noms.

Cute Mug

You and your bestie use Saturdays to craft constantly anyway, so show her some love on this special day by making her a little DIY mug at Clay Café. We’re thinking something like “Boys: Who Needs 'Em” or “Girl Power.” Fill it with chocolates, or just the leftover wine from your romcom marathon last night.

Face Up To It

The one person who will always be there for you no matter what? YOU. Why bother buying chocolates for someone else when you are seriously lacking in the self-love? Time to remedy that, and nothing is more refreshing and rejuvenating than a little facial and spa therapy. Head over to Green Spa for 20 percent off in February—think of it as a present to yourself.

Shop It Out

As you know, one of our favorite things to do is treat yo’self. The best part of Valentine’s Day may be the fact that malls and stores don’t close like they do on Christmas, keeping them wide open for you to go on a shopping spree and fall in love with that one (or two, or three, or four) special bauble, dress or pair of shoes.
