When Dr. Jerald Garcia, a double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain specialist, founded the Hawaii Institute of Pain (aka HI Pain) nine years ago, he had one mission in mind: To help the Hawaii community by treating chronic pain and giving patients the best possible outcome while providing them with the best possible experience. Now with three locations between Oahu and Maui plus a team of dedicated pain experts, Dr. Garcia ascertains that this mission still holds true today. “I make sure that everyone who is part of the HI Pain team knows our mission by heart. Our interactions with patients and the clinical decisions that we make are laser-focused on one goal, which is to change our patients’ lives for the better by diminishing their pain,” Dr. Garcia shares. To accomplish this goal, Dr. Garcia and his team of highly qualified pain physicians and providers utilize cutting-edge techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation of pain-causing nerves or creating electrical changes in the spine, in order to inhibit or disrupt pain signals.
“Acute pain, generally speaking, is a good type of pain because it is purposeful by allowing damaged tissues to heal. This type of pain usually resolves on its own and treatment is mostly rest and supportive care,” Dr. Garcia reveals. “However, chronic pain is a completely different animal and it serves no purpose other than to cause pain for a very long period of time. Thus, the treatment approach is very different. The goal becomes to decrease the pain experience so that the patient does not lose functionality and can still maintain a reasonably good quality of life. This is where we come in.”
Dr. Garcia was trained by the top global experts in pain medicine and has himself become a leader in the field, having lectured and taught other pain physicians nationally. This is his fifth straight year being named a Top Doctor in HONOLULU Magazine and he attributes this honor to his patients who have entrusted their care to him and his team. “It is an immense responsibility that we take very seriously. We keep abreast with recent research and development so that we may continually provide patients with the latest and greatest advancements, giving every patient that walks through HI Pain’s doors the best chance at diminishing pain and regaining his or her life back.”
