When Dr. Darrell Lee co-founded Pacific Endoscopy Center to bring quality gastrointestinal care to West O‘ahu, he had no idea it would lead to the creation of Hawai‘i’s largest group of GI centers. Starting with PEC in Pearl City, that group now encompasses three other centers in Honolulu and Hilo.
“We are the largest provider of GI services, and together we provide the best and most advanced GI care in Hawai‘i,” Lee says.
Lee’s vision started years ago when he realized there was no full-time GI specialist on the West Side. Worse, the wait time for a routine colonoscopy—the most important tool in detecting and preventing colon cancer—was up to six months. Enter PEC. All its gastroenterologists are board-certified and use state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, including the state’s only colonoscope with a 330-degree field of view, nearly double the traditional 170-degree view. Now patients can schedule exams usually within two weeks.
That’s not enough for Lee. With West O‘ahu’s population growing, he’s working on a new facility and recruiting more specialists trained at the nation’s top institutions. It’s part of his vision of taking care of people. Many seniors can’t make the drive into town or find doctors willing to take them. Lee does. “It’s the ethical thing to do,” he says. “It’s the right thing.”
