Thursday's Theatrics

Thursday hasn’t always been a popular night out. But, with a little bit of creativity, a few bars have put Thursdays back on the radar with new scenes and unique promotions. I don’t even remember the last time Thursday nights were as entertaining as right now.

I’ll begin with Salsa Thursdays. It was previously held at Fisherman’s Wharf, but, starting tomorrow, the salsa scene takes over Oceans808. The great thing about salsa nights is that there will never be an empty dance floor and there will always be someone to dance with. Complimentary lessons with Greg “Salsaman” Henry begin from 9:15 to 10:00 p.m., followed by dancing as Da Lion of Judah spins Salsa, Bachata, Latin House and more. 21+, $10 cover. December 3 & 10, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.; December 17, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

How many times have you been asking yourself, “When am I ever going to get to ride a mechanical bull?” Ok. Maybe that’s just me. But, when I visited Level 4 for its Babes, Bulls and Barrels promotion, I saw women far outnumbering the men. They were dressed in jeans and cowboy hats cheering each other on and eager to take their turn on the stage. After having my fill of laughs from watching the girls struggle to hang on, the bouncer told me, “If you think that’s funny, wait till later. The girls start to ride in twos and threes.” 21+, no cover, 2233 Kalakaua Ave., Royal Hawaiian Center, Waikiki.

Are you a member of the Prohibition Honolulu facebook group? If not, then you’d better join in order to get invites to its Thursday night party at Thirtyninehotel. Prohibition’s theme is that of a modern speakeasy with special cocktails, silent movies being played on its white walls—genius!—and people actually dressed up in snazzy ’20s and ’30s attire. And, what’s a 1920s speakeasy without a secret password? You’ll get one of those too with confirmation of attendance to the event via Facebook. 21+, 39 N. Hotel St., www.thirtyninehotel.com
