1. Nature’s Wonders Shine at Bishop Museum
Now through October 27
You’ve probably seen the Bishop Museum’s whale a thousand times, but did you know that the Museum also has a natural history collection with more than 22 million specimens? Check out the new Nature’s Wonders exhibit to see golden metallic beetles, multi-colored Birds of Paradise, nautilus, ferns, moths and butterflies in a “celebration of the aesthetic beauty of unique specimens that will educate and delight.”

2. Courtyard Cinema Free Screening: Sept. 11 film “16 Acres”
Thursday, September 11
This month, Ward Village’s free courtyard cinema series features the Sept. 11 documentary film 16 Acres. It follows the rebuilding at Ground Zero over 11 years and traces some of the complicated political and emotional issues surrounding the future of the site. Tickets to the courtyard cinema showings usually sell out in advance, so act fast.

3. Club hop and dance to these DJs
Friday, September 12
Begin your Friday night at The Safehouse (the lounge inside The Republik) for local DJ SuperCW’s Sunny Daze CD Release Party. The first 100 people through the door after 9 p.m. receive a copy of her CD. SuperCW, aka Christa Wittmier, has been a mainstay in Honolulu’s nightlife scene as a director of marketing for alcohol distributor Young’s Market Company, and as a writer. Within the past few years, however, she has also climbed the ranks as a DJ and now holds multiple DJ residencies in Hawaii.

Next stop, head to The Modern Honolulu for Skam Artist DJ Fred Matters’ special appearance at Addiction nightclub. His hip hop mashups have caught the attention of the likes of Snoop Dog, Wiz Khalifa and Busta Rhymes (and he was selected recently by Heidi Klum to perform at her Halloween party).

If you don’t want to squeeze that all into one night, DJ Fred Matters will also perform at Addiction on Saturday night.
4. Hawaii Five-0 Season 5 Premiere
September 13
The Hawaii Five-0 season premiere rolls out the red carpet again at Waikiki Beach, first with the stars at 6 p.m., then the show screening at 7 p.m. Immediately after the show, there will be a live performance by British alternative rock band Bush. (Why Bush, so long after the ’90s? Lead singer Gavin Rossdale’s new album, Man on the Run, releases next month.) Thousands line up on the beach for this annual premiere, so arrive (extremely) early and be prepared to wait and sit. And wait.

5. Pacific Aviation Museum screening Under the Blood-Red Sun film
September 14
Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor presents Under the Blood-Red Sun Day. Join author Graham Salisbury for a family Sunday at the museum to celebrate the 20th anniversary edition of this popular childhood book and a screening of the new independent movie. It’s the story of a young Japanese-American boy’s struggles with wartime discrimination just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Meet and greet the movie’s director Tim Savage and some of the actors.
From noon to 5 p.m. with the screening 1:30 to 3 p.m. Free with museum admission. Tickets and event information are available at PacificAviationMuseum.org.
6. Hawaii Symphony Orchestra: The Bard, Ballet and Bolero
Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14
The Hawaii Symphony opens its 2014-2015 season this weekend with conductor Stuart Chafetz leading the orchestra through works that include the Overture Fantasy to Romeo & Juliet by Tchaikovsky and Selections from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelsohn and Ravel’s Bolero. Also on stage, local ballet group Onium Ballet Project will perform, led by artistic director Minou Lallemond.
