This O‘ahu Label Whips Up Cozy, Boho-Cool Macramé

Seventies décor trend macramé is back and in a big way, reappearing in everything from bikinis and pet leashes to Christmas ornaments. In Island homes, intricately patterned hangings are once again dressing up walls, while earthy plant hangers are the perfect small-space accessory.

Local macramé artist Nicole Iglesias attributes the comeback to a renewed interested in the artisanal. “There's been a huge resurgence of local crafters embracing handmade arts and people are looking for pieces that are one of a kind,” she says. It’s also thanks to the art form’s versatility. “The possibilities of what you can create, from jewelry to furniture to décor, even clothing, are endless.”

Iglesias herself fell in love with macramé when she got a book of designs from 1973. She began crafting pieces while baby-proofing her house, whipping up hangers to keep houseplants out of her newborn son’s reach.

Under her brand, Notted Nest, she creates stylish home décor, including wall hangings, dreamcatchers, wreaths, ornaments and planter covers, along with jewelry and wedding backdrops. Her eclectic designs blend classic and modern techniques, incorporating pops of color, playful elements such as pompoms, tassels and wrapped thread, and upcycled driftwood, bamboo and glass floats.

Iglesias even hosts regular macramé workshops at floral boutique Paiko, if you feel like tapping into your own knotty side.
