Academy Award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto recently listed his Wai‘alae Iki home for $2.95 million. Sakamoto received an Academy Award in 1987 for best original score for The Last Emperor; in 2015, his score for The Revenant was nominated for Golden Globe and BAFTA awards.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,311-square-foot home at 1525 Ehupua Place was designed by architect Sid Snyder of Ossipoff Snyder Architects Inc. in 1969. Looking to reuse and include natural elements when possible, Snyder used recycled stepping-stones from O‘ahu Sugar Mill and created fresh stucco with sand from Waimānalo, mixing it with concrete and water. The home was never painted, just treated to create a whitewashed look on the rough-cut lumber.

Perched on the hillside, each room in the house features exposed wood and large picture windows to take advantage of the magnificent view of the ocean. Floor-to-ceiling folding doors provide natural ventilation and circulation to cool the house. A covered lānai serves as a second, open-air living room. Multiple decorative wall cutouts throughout offer additional ventilation (and allow your music to flow from room to room). A private courtyard, modern kitchen and private office all make this a very livable, beautiful modern space.
