The Ultimate Guide to the Sailor Jerry Festival 2016

Stewed, screwed and tattooed: the proud motto of sailors and soldiers stationed in Honolulu during WWII. Trendy restaurants and cozy rooftop lounge bars didn’t exist in 1940s Chinatown. In fact, Hotel Street was lined with brothels, bars and many tattoo parlors. There was one tattoo shop that stood out from the rest, Sailor Jerry Tattoo, owned by the iconic tattoo artist himself, Norman Collins aka Sailor Jerry.
Collins setup shop in the middle of all the action on 1033 Smith St., which is now a tattoo shop called Old Ironside Tattoo (another nickname Collins had). Back then, a simple tattoo cost $3; today, a deposit for a tattoo is about $100. Collins suffered a heart attack and passed away on June 12, 1973 (he’s buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific). His legacy still lives on and you can celebrate him at the Second Annual Sailor Jerry Festival on Saturday, June 11 in, of course, Chinatown. This year expect to listen to a new band lineup and a headliner from Los Angeles, The Aggrolites. Two new venues will be participating this year, so you can party in seven different bars.
