The Latest Buzz in Cocktails is Now at Hukilau Honolulu

The Downtown restaurant is the only place serving cannabidiol cocktails. Don’t worry; it’s legal.

We had stopped by Hukilau Honolulu—conveniently located next door to our offices—last week to try its new house-made kombucha slushies.

That’s when co-owner Kawehi Haug introduced us to something new, on the menu starting today: CBD cocktails.

CBD, the abbreviation for cannabidiol, is one of the medical compounds found in the cannabis plant. It’s nothing like TCH—or tetrahydrocannabinol—the compound responsible for a euphoric high. (You know, the “stoned” effects of marijuana.) CBD won’t get you high.

The ingredient isn’t currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but research shows CBD can be helpful in lessening anxiety for people who have schizophrenia or psychosis, or who are addicted to opiates. There’s also evidence it can help children who suffer from epilepsy.

CBD is often added to or infused into foods, liquids, nutritional supplements, topicals and even cosmetics. You can find it in everything from gummies to calming bath soaks, with most of the products claiming to ease pain and anxiety.

Hukilau Honolulu is the first restaurant to serve CBD-infused cocktails, from the Scoby Snack (white rum, Midori liqueur, house-made pineapple kombucha and citrusy curaçao) to the Maui Wowie (Pau vodka and ginger beer).

The Li Hing Marga-Reefer ($15), with Kapena li hing-infused tequila, triple sec, and sweet and sour mix.

Right now, it has 10 of these cocktails on the menu, with prices ranging from $11 to $16. And we love the names: Li Hing Marga-Reefer, Bloody Mary Jane, High Tai.

“It’s a growing trend on the Mainland,” Haug explains. “The CBD is tasteless and odorless. All of our cocktails are made from scratch with local ingredients.”
