The History of Hawai‘i From Our Files: Lecturer Fanny W. Krause Travels North America to Teach People About the Hawaiian Islands

For 133 years HONOLULU Magazine has kept its readers and advertisers at the vanguard of fashion, insight and fun. Starting out as Paradise of the Pacific in 1888 with a commission from King Kalākaua, we’re the oldest continually publishing magazine west of the Mississippi. Here is a look into our archives in 2010.

Lecturer Fanny W. Krause travels North America to teach people about the Hawaiian Islands. “Mrs. Krause told of the climate, scenery, people, resources, opportunities and advantages of these islands before audiences … whose memories will never forsake the knowledge thus gained and who, in return, are passing along the good words for America’s enchanting mid-Pacific isles,” Paradise writes. “If continental Americans knew more of Hawaii they would pay less serious attention to alarmists who attempt to make out a case of ill-feeling between the two greatest nations bordering on the Pacific,” Paradise says, addressing the rumors of possible trouble between the U.S. and Japan. At the time, Japanese people made up a large percentage of Hawai‘i’s population, despite 1907’s informal agreement between the two countries to stop allowing immigration to the U.S. (including Hawai‘i).
