The Best Things to Do and Buy This Weekend

Lei Chic’s guide to the weekend’s best events.

SHOP

Eel It In

What: There may be many fish in the sea, but, if you ask us, there aren’t enough eels—Fighting Eels, that is. This super stylish local brand of boutiques and clothing is one of our faves, so we’re excited about the opening of the latest Kāhala Mall location. Don’t miss the grand opening, where you’ll get to see the debut of its spring collection, take some snapshots in the Fighting Eel custom photo booth and snack on pūpū and drinks. Oh, did we mention there will be cupcakes by Sweet Temptations Cupcakery?
When: Saturday, Jan. 24, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: Fighting Eel, Kāhala Mall, near Center Court
Details: Call 738-4912 for more information.

MAKE

Face It

What: Don’t get us wrong, we love local soap companies. In fact, we love them so much we’re a little jealous those guys are having all the fun. If you’re feeling bitten by the DIY soap-making bug, too, join in at The Face Shop’s Saturday soap-making class. Will soap with lavender oil work better with your skin? Or maybe a little orange peel? Learn about the molding and ingredient processes (and, of course, sample the goods with a couple of whiffs).  The best part is it’s completely free.
When: Saturday, Jan. 24 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 and noon
Where: The Face Shop, Waimalu Plaza, 98-1277 Ka‘ahumanu St.
Details: Call 589-3223 for more information.

SHOP

Estee Put

What: There are few things we love more than shopping for beauty products. One of those things is getting beauty products for free. Combine the two at Neiman Marcus, where you get a free, exclusive tote filled with deluxe samples when you spend $75 or more on Estee Lauder merchandise. This bundle of goodies includes Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II, ReNutriv Ultimate Lift Age Correcting Creme, Sumptuous Extreme Bold Volume Lifting Mascara, an AERIN Lilac Path fragrance sample and full-size lipstick and eyeshadow palettes in your choice of colors.
When: Through January 25
Where: Neiman Marcus, Ala Moana Center
Details: One gift per person, while supplies last.

SHOP

Bag Lady

What: You can never have too many friends, shoes or bags. And it’s a good thing. Now that the flagship Oncöur store just opened in Ala Moana Center, you’ll probably add to your purse collection quite soon. The luxury retail spot carries American-made leather handbags and accessories with nautical inspirations. Not that you have to convince us to buy supple leather totes, but the store (decorated to look like a boat) goes the extra distance—at least a few knots or so—with a video-screen-decorated interior that simulates a virtual yacht excursion along the waterways of Connecticut.
Where: Ala Moana Center, near Macy’s
Details: Call 955-6090 for more information.

READ

Screen Stylin’

What: OK, let’s be honest: Our first idea of fashion-love-at-first-sight had a lot to do with our American Girl dolls’ wardrobes (Samantha was such a fierce dresser). Another way we got inspired to be stylish? The leading ladies of the silver screen. Check out this article on Flavorwire about the 10 most iconic dresses in cinema (they left out Padme Amidala, but whatevs), then throw it back hard and rent a few of these flicks for a really retro fashion fix. Seriously, Michelle’s dress from Scarface? We’d totally wear that now.
Where: Flavorwire.com
Details: Another of our favorite stylish screen sirens? Anna Karina, who always looked too cute.

Attend

High Spirits

What: Last year could have been better. You have a clean slate now, but it would still be nice to be prepared for what the rest of your year has to offer. Why not check out the Arts District Holistic Fair this weekend to see if you can’t get some answers from a variety of psychic readers and healers specializing in energy work, intuitive healing, Reiki and aromatherapy? While you’re at it, realize your creative potential with experiences such as a dreamcatcher workshop.
When: Saturday, Jan. 24, noon–4 p.m.
Where: Louis Pohl Gallery and eleven44
Details: Free admission.
