Hawai‘i International Film Festival

One of the most anticipated films of this year’s festival is the local indie piece Kuleana, starring an all-Hawai‘i cast. It screens at Dole Cannery on Nov. 3 and 5. Check online for the full festival schedule, including events at other venues.

Who’s Bad—The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience

The Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra’s musicthatROCKS series kicks off with a concert from Who’s Bad, the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band. Expect to see some of MJ’s signature moves on stage, bolstered by the symphony’s masterful accompaniment.

Holo Moana: Generations of Voyaging

Over the past few decades—and the past year, especially—Polynesian voyaging has experienced a revival and made international headlines, from Hōkūle‘a’s trip around the world to the Disney blockbuster Moana. This exhibition explores its resurgence with interactive videos, including footage from the original launch of Hōkūle‘a in the mid-1970s.

Ja Rule and Ashanti

Ja Rule’s Fyre Festival fiasco doesn’t seem to have diminished the rapper’s popularity—tickets for the 7 p.m. concert sold out immediately. He teams up with longtime collaborator Ashanti for two shows that will feature throwback gems “Mesmerize” and “Always On Time.”

As the Honolulu Marathon creeps nearer, make sure you’re on top of your training! Even if you’re not planning to run the full 26.2 miles come December, you can still join in this 10-mile run. Nāpua’s fourth album ventures beyond traditional Hawaiian music, incorporating covers of a country song (“Good As I Was To You”) and even a Japanese lullaby (“Warabigami”). The Maui native is also a kumu hula and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner.
You may recognize Nāpua’s voice from the Disney Pixar short film, “Lava.”
