The 2009 Photo Contest

Presenting the winners of the 2009 Honolulu Magazine/Hotels & Resorts of Halekulani Photo Contest.

CHICKEN, Andie Lucia Bustillos, Third Place.
(Panasonic Lumix DMC-L27)
*Wins a weekend stay (two nights) at Waikiki Parc Hotel

"I took this photo at my friend’s graduation party. The boys chased the chicken for 10 minutes until they finally caught it."

WALLS, Charles Bowen, Second Place.
(Nikon D700)
*Wins a weekend stay (two nights) at Halekulani Hotel.

"Pure fun at Walls! These local kids spend the whole summer hanging out and surfing with their friends and family. Everyone in Hawaii knows of Walls and the infamous wall rats. It is a part of many childhood memories of growing up in Waikiki. This is an image of a kid jumping off the wall as the wave breaks on to the front of the pier. Not the typical surf shot, just a boy having fun."

ISLAND COLONY, Philippe Gross, First Place.
(Nikon D700)
*Wins a weekend stay (two nights) at Halekulani Hotel and a Spa Halekulani Experience.

"Living in a condominium, the most public aspect of one’s living quarters is the lanai, which displays a variety of residents’ styles and personalities in an otherwise rigid architecture. Here is a group portrait of life at Island Colony in Waikiki."

DREAMLAND, Omer Kursat, Second Honorable Mention.
(HorizonT)

"Kids fall asleep at an adult party—surrounded by an adult life, symbols and icons that influence their dreams. I increased the contrast and added some noise to emphasize the dreamlike state. The picture can be viewed horizontally from the kids’ perspective, and vertically from the adults’ perspective."

HOTEL STREET NO. 2, Fred Mariconda, First Honorable Mention.
(Sony Cybershot DSC-W200)

"I shoot from TheBus each day on my way to work. There are scratches and smudges on the windows that create interesting images. This photo has a forlorn, Edward Hopper kind of feel to it. That’s why I enjoy it."
