That’s the Ticket
Lately, all of your movie choices have turned out to be major box office crashes. You seriously can't sit through another predictable, dialogue-void action pic or cheesy, teen-starlet-filled drama. Sorry, LiLo.
Luckily, the Hawai‘i International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow. But with 170-plus films from over 30 countries showing, picking which flicks to watch is a reel challenge.
So we asked our gal-pal Sarah Honda, HIFF Development Director, former SMART Magazine editor and all around cool-girl to help us screen our time in front of the big screen. Here, a few of her favorite films, broken down by personality — a flick for every type of chick.
For the: Fashionista
Must-see: Bill Cunningham New York
I was so excited when this documentary was confirmed! As a devoted fan of photographer Bill Cunningham's "On The Street" column featured in The New York Times, this is on my must-see list to get to know the man behind the camera.
For the: Surfer Girl
Must-see: First Love
Surf Cinema, HIFF's surf film section, always has a great selection of surf films, but rarely do they feature surfer girls. This documentary follows the lives of three girls, different in their own ways, who share a love for surfing.
For the: Art Enthusiast
Must-see: Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child
An amazing documentary, directed by Tamra Davis, about her friend and genuis artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The film features a never-before-seen interview with Basquiat that Davis filmed two years before his death.
For the: Fangirl
Must-see: The People Versus George Lucas
A funny documentary that pits the fans against George Lucas. If you've made a Chewbacca puppet or a Han Solo painting, or written a song about the Death Star (guilty!), then this one's for you.
For the: Gourmand
Must-see: Rinco's Restaurant
Out of heartbreak, a young woman moves back home and focuses on cooking. She opens a restaurant, but only cooks one meal for one customer per day. A fantastical story of love, healing and food.
For the: Music Lover
Must-see: This Movie Is Broken
A love story-slash-concert film shot documentary style. Boy has crush on girl, but girl is leaving to study abroad…tomorrow. And tonight's Broken Social Scene concert is his last change to get the girl.
