You’re quite the green crusader these days – you’ve donned gorgeous organic dresses, found an eco-consultant, and even visited an all-natural salon. And now, you can spruce up your wardrobe with recycled accessories made right here in Hawai‘i. There’s never been a better time to think globally and accessorize locally.
Tie One On
Freshen up your dresses with the obi-wrapped belts from ccdoodle. Local designer Christy Chung makes the beautiful belts by hand, using vintage obi fabrics from her family that date back 35-plus years. Wrap the belt however you want for dozens of different looks.

Scrap Happy
You can feel good about adorning yourself in MCK Metal, the street-meets-beach jewelry line from Kona designer McKenzie Santimer. She salvages leather from an Indiana tannery, meaning the leftover scraps from gloves and bags don’t end up in the trash, but rather are transformed into her gorgeous earrings. Santimer hand-tools the leather into tropical designs such as coffee leaves, monsteria and hibiscus.

You’ve got the write stuff, thanks to the eco-friendly notebooks from Mu‘umu‘u Heaven. They’re made from vintage album covers and 100 percent recycled paper. You’ll find Hawaiian artists, natch, but also awesome 80’s covers like Miami Vice and Def Leppard.

Put a Lid on It
Top it all off with Royal Crowns, the newest accessories to hit the Islands. Big Island artist Sarah Indio creates truly original hats from “upcycled” palm fibers, by gathering trimmed foliage from palm trees before landscapers can toss them. She then hangs, processes, and sanitizes them, and after sewing them into a variety of hat styles, lines them with vintage fabrics.

Carry On
Rock a recycled purse, clutch or tote from Genuine Guava bags, made by local girl Kawehi Kuhau. She scours thrift stores for aloha shirts, dresses, ties, or any cool prints she can find, and reconstructs them into handmade, one-of-a-kind creations.
