What to do on your bonus day off? In honor of their day, give most of those presidents in your wallet a break. Here's a list of ways to go holoholo for under $5.

Downtown
You keep your head down when you're rushing to work. But there's a lot to see in downtown Honolulu, especially when it's easier to find parking (like on a federal holiday).
Experience: A stroll through history for free with travel guru Frommers online walking tours. Print them out and hit the road to learn about the unusual stones in the pavement at Hotel and Smith streets, or why you shouldn't sit in the back pews at Kawaiahao Church. Then take a free ride up Aloha Tower, once the tallest building in Hawaii, for a view of the harbor.
Eat: The best bargain for lunch is still a roll of fresh look funn at Ying Leong Look Funn Factory. Char siu, shrimp,  or plain rolls of the thick rice noodle sell for less than $1.50. Tip: The char siu sells out before 1:00 p.m.
For a new experience, catch a coffee show at Beach Bum Cafe on Bishop Street. Workers use one of four different techniques to brew each locally-grown cup individually. It takes awhile, but you can munch on tasty CakeWorks pastries while you wait.
Ying Leong Look Funn Factory is open daily from 6:30 a.m. – until about 3:00 p.m. at 1028 Kekaulike St., 808.537.4304.
Beach Bum Cafe at 1088 Bishop St., Suite 101 near Hawaii Pacific University is open Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 808.521.6699

Kailua
You've run over for breakfast, and stuck to the Kailua Road route. Now the town is booming with bus loads of Japanese tourists shuttling through every day. So how about checking out the natural side of Kailua?
Experience: The Kawainui Marsh Trail. The paved route stretches for three easy-to-walk miles that take you through the 830-acre area. You'll have unobstructed views of the Koolaus, and are sure to bump into the marsh's four endangered birds and 60+ other types of wildlife. Find the trail at the end of Kaha Street off of Oneawa Street.
Eat: We're still mourning the closing of Brent's.  And have you seen the line at Boots & Kimo's lately? Moke's Bread and Breakfast just started a lunch menu. From noon-3:00 p.m. the breakfast favorite serves up reubens and other sandwiches on its homemade bread. Try the bread pudding with a luscious lilikoi sauce for $4.
Then just buzz around the corner to a newcomer Chadlou's. Get your morning jolt with their special brews such as the passion fruit, lychee and pineapple Aloha Oe. The lavender almond Kula latte ($3.55) was surprisingly non-soapy tasting, with just a hint of floral, and enough spice to balance it out.  Next: we're going for their ice grinds.
Moke's Bread and Breakfast opens on 27 Hoolai St. from 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and is closed on Tuesdays.
Chadlou's at 45 Kihapai St., is open 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on weekends. 808.263.7930.

North Shore
You've shuttled through at a snail's pace behind the tour buses and tourist-driven mustang convertibles, while waiting to hit the waves. There is a place away from the water where you can get a moment of peace.
Experience: Puu O Mahuka is Oahu's largest heiau. Go past Waimea Bay, turn up Pupukea Road near Foodland, and at the end you'll find the 5-acres of ruins left from the 1600s. Park for a visit and a beautiful view of Waimea Bay. Read more here about the National Historic Landmark.
Eat: There are a wealth of sandwich stops built to feed hungry surfers. But true to an old sugar area, Haleiwa has a sweet spot for desserts. If you haven't had breakfast yet, Coffee Gallery has one baked for take out.  On weekends, baker Minx serves up an eggs-and-bacon scone along with her daily decadent sweet pastries.  Add on a cup of its on-site roasted coffee  for a total of less than $5.
For lunch, stop by Waialua Bakery. Along with sandwiches on homemade bread, check out the display case of banana bread pudding, brownies and cookies, all for $2 or less.
Coffee Gallery is located next to Cholos in the North Shore Marketplace , 66-250 Kamehameha Hwy. Open 6:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily. 808.637.5355
Waialua Bakery is next to Malama Market 66-200 Kamehameha Highway, Haleiwa. It's open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., 808.637.9079
