Sweetie Pie

Let them eat cake?

Fine. You’ll take the pie anyway.

As in, authentic southern-style pies from Shelby Sweets, which just opened last week at Nimitz Center.

Owner Phyllis Moore-Shelby has been doing custom baking for weddings and private clients for years as a side venture while she worked full-time as a flight attendant. But she’s settled down now and finally opened a store, where you can mosey in to taste her deep-dish pies, as well as all kinds of other treats that come out of her oven daily.

Each morning brings four flavors of scones (the lemon-blueberry and coconut-pineapple-raisin are popular), as well as cupcakes, quickbreads and cookies. And then there are the pies. She doesn’t sell by the slice, instead, all the flavors come in individual sizes or in two-bite petit four size, all with the same extra-flaky, crumbly crusts as her 9-inch full size pies. Her southern specialties include pumpkin, pecan, custard, or sweet potato (our favorite), as well as strawberry mousse, apple, or pumpkin crunch.

And for Christmas she’ll be making specialty cakes like rum, red velvet and fruitcake.

She’s taking orders for Thanksgiving starting today.
So you’ll want to get your piece of this pie.
