Colorful greeting-card creations from Beachcake

Sending your friend a cute note? Super sweet. Sending one of those lovey dovey commercial greeting cards? Talk about sugar overload. Get that sickeningly saccharine Hallmark flavor out of your mouth with new stationery from Mariko Merritt’s line, Beachcake, the perfect balance of salty and sweet.

All of the tasty creations are inspired by the freelance graphic designer’s love of the ocean: metallic two-toned jelly fish with sprawling tentacles, demure rainbow-colored mermaids twisting and frolicking, the words “Happy Birthday” bounding amid rolling waves. Merritt creates her card confections using a unique Print Gocco machine from Japan, which stamps her images using multiple shades—different from traditional screen printing, and responsible for the kaleidoscope of color in her designs.

The Beachcake line also includes treats for your home, including Merritt’s precious ceramic sea creature figurines such as endearing narwhals, comical sharks and serene turtles. And for a no-calorie sweetener that will really seal the deal—er, envelope—the next time you have a note to send? Through July 4, get 15 percent off everything in the store with the code SUMMER15.

Now that’s what we call a sugar “hi!”

Available at the Beachcake Etsy shop, Sugarcane Shop, 1137 11th Ave., 739-2263, and Drift, 3434 Waialae Ave., 284-1177. To see more of Merritt's work, check out her Instagram @heybeachcake.
