Summary of the DOE “Guidance on Supports for Transgender Students”


Individual needs should be assessed after meeting with each student and, if appropriate, parents or guardians. Each student’s gender identity and agreed-upon supports should be communicated to staff.



Students should have access to a restroom that corresponds with their gender identity, or a gender- neutral single-stall option if preferred.


Locker rooms

Students should have access to the facility that matches their gender identity, and alternate changing spaces should be provided for students—transgender or not—who want more privacy.



Teachers and staff should address students by their preferred names and pronouns, even if no legal changes have been made. Class rosters should be updated.



While official reports and standardized tests use birth names, faculty and staff should treat this as confidential information, unless legally required to reveal it.



Students should be allowed to participate in gender-segregated recreational activities and sports; guidelines for competitive athletics are under discussion.



Dress codes should be gender neutral. Students may dress in accordance with their gender identity and gender expression.


Other gender-based activities

Students should be permitted to participate in any gender-based activity that matches their identity, such as segregated choral groups, theatrical roles and graduation, in the attire of their choice.
