Ward Village recently opened South Shore Market, which is filled with 18 locally owned shops, some that had only operated in pop-ups. And to celebrate, it put on a runway show featuring a mix of new faces along with some old favorites during HONOLULU Fashion Week at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.

Featured shops include: Big Bad Wolf, The Collective, Kealopiko, Mori by Art + Flea and Poshd by Valerie Joseph.

Kealopiko is being welcomed by many who favor Hawaiian culturally conscious clothes that are also comfortable and stylish for a broad range of shapes and sizes.

The brand was founded a decade ago by three women with varied professional interests. Co-founder Jamie Makasobe says the trio had been waiting for the right fit for their storefront and found it in the stylish grouping of local shops and artisans.

While they hadn’t anticipated opening a brick-and-mortar store, Makasobe said that Howard Hughes Corp. came up with a planned community of local businesses that made sense to them: “How it was going to be a shared space; that’s what intrigued us,” she says.

The high ceilings, artwork by Sig Zane and Kelsey Montague and the shared community space all offer a more intimate shopping experience than a mall but South Shore Market stores share foot traffic with larger retail neighbors that include Nordstrom Rack, T.J. Maxx and Pier 1 Imports. The 25,125-square-foot venue is located at the corner of Auahi Street and Queen Lane, beneath T.J. Maxx and across from the IBM building. While several of the shops opened recently, most of the food-related retailers will open later.
