Searching for a Hawaii Kai rental

Last week I received an email from a woman looking for “an executive rental” in Hawaii Kai. She’s relocating with her husband and their dog, which can make finding a desirable rental much more difficult. (The dog part, not the husband.)

Since I'm not a realtor, I referred her to a couple real estate companies that handle long-term rentals such as Sandwich Isles Realty and Prudential Locations LLC. I also recommended she turn to the ole online standby, Craigslist. Even though it’s often slammed for its seedier side, the classified ad powerhouse is really the place to find hot properties.

It’s so popular I now see more and more postings by real estate agents, which makes sense to gain exposure for their listings. It is where most people start their search for a rental.

I decided to take a look to see what was available with the woman’s criteria. I don't usually do this, but it seemed like a good excuse to get a handle on rentals in the area. Nine properties came up in my search on places in Hawaii Kai that allow dogs. She hadn’t given me a price, so I left out those parameters. Two homes immediately caught my eye.

At the top of the list was “Executive Home in Hawaii Kai” posted two days ago. Located in Mariner’s Ridge, it’s an attractive one-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath house that’s been newly remodeled with a spa tub in the master bathroom. (The kitchen is pictured above.) The price? $2,500 a month, plus utilities.

The other place, posted by realtor Delores Sandvold of SandSea Real Estate, was a waterfront townhouse in Gateway Peninsula. The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath unit comes with front and back lanais and two assigned parking stalls. Renters also have access to the community’s amenities including a heated pool and clubhouse. The price? $3,300 a month.

There were a few others with lower rents, but not as nice as the ones above. Since the woman did specify “executive” in her email to me, I imagine those would fall within her price range. With an eagle eye on Craigslist and a bit of research, she should have no trouble finding a Hawaii Kai rental to house her and her husband. Even with their pup.
