Rock Your World
Tired of running on a treadmill and feeling like you’re going nowhere?
Then maybe it’s time to revamp your fitness workout this new year and actually go somewhere.
Like, up.
Hawai‘i Rocks Climbing School offers an introduction to climbing and rappelling at Makapu‘u Point just about every week.
You'll learn about proper equipment use, safety and basic climbing techniques. And you don’t have to be young and fit or a competitive triathlete to learn the ropes. The school once had a first-time climber who was 77 years old.
Unlike the track to nowhere you’ve been running, rock climbing gets you out hiking to some of the most beautiful vistas in the world, it’s low-impact on the body, and don’t forget all the calories − around 700 an hour − you can burn.
Scared of heights? So was instructor Mike Richardson, at first. But that was 20 years ago. He’s been addicted ever since.
Now you know who to call if you want to get high.
Hawaii Rocks Climbing School, eight-hour class is $130 per person, $75 per person for a pair, and $65 per person for groups of three or more (kamaaina rates), 808.387.7825, www.climbaloha.com.
