A Relaxing Meal with Toddlers (Really!)

Finally! A dinner out where my kids can run free and dance, and I can chill with a Mai Tai in peace. Allow me to explain.

Every once in a while, we like to escape our usual go-to spots in town and visit Ko Olina for a little mini-holiday. It may be a touristy resort area, but it’s fun to pretend you’re on vacation, if only for a few hours. Recently we checked out Longboard’s Bar & Grill at the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club for an early dinner at sunset. Turns out, this beachside restaurant is surprisingly kid-friendly.

The view over the lagoon is stunning and perfect for sunset. The tables are over sand—which my kids (and I) loved. There were young children all around, happily digging and driving toy trucks through it. The crayons at the table kept the kiddos busy while we ordered cocktails. We skipped the $11 kid’s meal and let them share our burger and fries instead.

Then, the live music started, and this is what made the evening. A swarm of toddler groupies gravitated to the stage, watching in fascination. It worked like magic—never have I dined out surrounded by so many tots with nary a tantrum. The place was packed with romping young children and no one seemed to mind. We were close enough that we could kick back with our food and cocktails while we kept an eye on our grooving tots.

Sure, you’re paying resort prices. (Note to Longboard’s: you should offer a kama‘āina discount.) And the food is just standard fare. But you know what? I’ll gladly splurge on a restaurant experience where I get to dig my toes in the sand, sip a tropical cocktail, listen to live music, and watch a gorgeous sunset over the ocean, all while my kids blissfully dance the evening away. I didn’t have to spend one moment forcing them to sit still in their chairs, and you can’t put a price on that. Finally, the entire family is happy. Now THIS feels like vacation.
