Raising the Cakes

Lei Chic Imagine this scenario, if you will.

It's your birthday. You've just finished an amazing meal when (do your eyes deceive you?) you're presented with a jaw-dropping pair of Christian Louboutin booties; the same ones you were totally eyeing in Neiman Marcus the other week.

Now, if only you could eat them…

Wish granted. Introducing Frosted, a boutique cake company recently acquired by the Fairycakes team, taking orders now.

The confections are dreamt up by cake designer Elizabeth Ana Cera, who revamped recipes for both Frosted and Fairycakes, and added vegan, egg-, gluten- and sugar-free cakes to the menu. Recent successes include a bold green tea cake with rich cream cheese frosting and chocolate cake with light, whipped chocolate and almond frosting.

But the true magic lies in her decorations. Cera sketches each design on paper before carving it out of cake. Then, she uses fondant, gum paste, crispy rice treats and food coloring to create stunningly realistic edible works of art – think tiered wedding cakes with intricate flowers, beading and bows, cars (including Fairycakes' own Lola van), even an overflowing toolbox.

Now back to those Louboutins, which Cera recreated down to the very last detail, from their stitched leather straps and metallic buckles to signature red soles – they're the latest in a series of chic designer cakes inspired by Cera's love of fashion. So, say you feel like eating red peeptoe Gucci heels over a black carrot cake shoe box, or a three-tiered Louis Vuitton luggage collection painted in edible metallic gold. Just shoot Cera an email and she'll be more than happy to make it for you.

With cakes this fashionable, you might not even wait for a special occasion to order one.

Mondays work too.

A sculpted Frosted cake will be on display at Fairycakes' Lola van this Friday at Eat the Street, 4-9 p.m., 555 South St., Kakaako. Cakes are priced by the slice, starting at $5. For more information, visit Frosted on Facebook, send an email or call (808) 599-0597.
