Pizza, flowers, fruit baskets—you’ve had them all delivered before. But fresh salsa? When did that become an option? About a month ago, thanks to husband-and-wife team Mike and Jen Quezada of Quezada’s Salsa. “When I was growing up, my mom would always make salsa,” says Mike, a Los Angeles native of half-Mexican, half-El Salvadorian ancestry. Today, he adds his own flair to recipes passed down to him from his parents and his grandmother.
Working out of a commercial kitchen in downtown Honolulu, Mike delivers fresh salsa and guacamole straight to your door—pretty much anywhere on Oʻahu. (So far, his farthest delivery has been to the North Shore.) He always makes the guacamole the day of delivery, adding lime for taste and placing an avocado pit in the middle to slow browning. With chunks of tomato and avocado, it’s delicious and flavorful.
Quezada’s currently offers two salsa flavors, both $7, named after their colors, in Spanish: amarillo (yellow) and rojo (red). Though they’re a little on the watery side, both have a freshness you can taste—the jarred supermarket versions have nothing on them. Amarillo, which is made with green tomatoes and peppers, has quite a kick to it. It’s perfect for those who like it hot, but may prove a bit too much for those who do not. Rojo, on the other hand, is great for any salsa lover. It’s bursting with flavor and is like a fresher, zestier version of a typical salsa.
Mike and Jen are currently in the process of getting their products into farmers markets. Once that happens, Mike hopes to expand the business by distributing Mexican-style pork, a dish his father, who grew up in Mexico, taught him to make. “This is my dream,” Mike says. “When I can make people happy through my cooking, that makes my day.”
