Pretty Packages

Even if you’re not a crafter, the new downtown shop Crafts in the City is worth checking out. Hobbyists can find scrapbooking materials, and jewelry-making supplies and classes, while others will enjoy good deals on beaded bracelets ($7 each!). My favorite section, though, is the gift-wrapping aisle: There’s a great selection of elegant, non-cheesy wrapping papers, gift bags, bows and ribbons. The patterns are contemporary—love the yellow, Swedish-inspired line, for example—and the colors meant to coordinate so it’s easy to whip up a stellar looking package. Sorry, Longs, but I’m buying my gift-wrap supplies here from now on instead. 1040 Bishop St., 536-5410. Open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, open for classes only. www.craftsinthecity.net.
