Own a renowned artist’s residence

The late Doris Milotta was a local artist whose works have been featured at the Honolulu Academy of Arts—mostly oil paintings ranging from ridiculous to sublime, from pigs to landscapes to religious interpretations. She was always outstanding in art; while still a college student, Doris had a painting accepted in a national exhibit in the Gallery of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

She’s best known, however, for creating “the Hawaiian Cross,” the chosen cover logo for the sesquicenntial edition of the Hawaiian language hymnal Na Himeni Haipule Hawaii. The cross design of sugar cane and pineapple depicts the healing and reconciliation in Christ.

The four bedroom, three bathroom home was built in 1976, but has been renovated with new paint, carpets, bathrooms and kitchen. It’s big, with 2,375 square feet of living area, including a downstairs apartment/artist studio with a separate entrance. The high, vaulted ceilings give a feeling of even more spaciousness.

As with many Haiku homes, this one has an inspiring view of the Koolau mountains, which can be enjoyed from the 200-square-foot open lanai area … or any part of the sprawling property, which is a little more than an acre.

The home’s first open house will be this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. If you’re interested in purchasing Milotta’s works, they will be sold at an estate and art sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
