Open house pick of the week: Queen Emma Gardens

This week’s open house pick is a small studio, but it’s a pretty good value for people who are starting out on their own and/or need to live close to downtown. (Click here for details.) And due to the price point, it’s getting a lot of calls.

The Queen Emma Gardens has always been a desirable place to live for those who like convenience and walkability. It scores 85 on, since it’s really a few minutes away from the financial district, Chinatown and the arts district (and thus, First Friday), the YMCA, Hawaii Theatre, Foster Botanical Gardens, and more.

The building is 48 years old, but this studio in the Prince Tower was renovated in December 2010 with contemporary touches so you feel like you’re in a more hip, stylish apartment. The kitchen and bath feature granite and travertine finishes, as well as designer-style lighting.

I actually kind of like the stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen and the way the counters and shelves make use of the limited space.

The bathroom also has an unusual layout that maximizes the space but has a trendy, magazine-worthy look to it.

With just 361 square feet, you might find yourself outdoors more often in the pool or play area, or walking the path that meanders past the tea house or koi pond. Or, since you’re so close to the action downtown, you can wander there and know that you’re just a few minutes from home to wander back.

While you’re there, check out unit 1251 in the Queen Tower, which is also renovated and for sale.

Happy house hunting!
