So many of my friends who are looking for a place in metro Honolulu are either priced out or outbid, and have to get their piece of real estate outside of the town boundaries. Hopefully, this week’s open-house pick is an affordable option.

Hale Kulanui is an older building—built in 1975—but this listing is a recently remodeled, 541-square-foot corner unit. It has one bedroom and one bathroom, with an exterior storage closet located on the same floor. (For those of you who have had exterior storage in a condo, you know how great this little bonus is.)

There are a lot of amenities that you wouldn’t expect in an older building, such as a community laundry, an onsite resident manager, a gym room, a pool and a reading room. It’s also pet friendly, which is a plus. Owner occupancy is at 87 percent, which is always a benefit, as owners tend to take better care of the building.

This part of the neighborhood is easily overlooked, as it’s tucked away from the main streets, surrounded by King Street, Kapi‘olani Boulevard, and University Avenue. Hale Kulanui is on the Diamond Head End of the cluster of buildings with no other building in front or to the back, which allows for better airflow and privacy.

Due to its location, Hale Kulanui has a WalkScore of 90 out of 100. It’s walking distance to bus stops, the University of Hawai‘i, shops and restaurants.

The unit will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 18. Click here for more information.

Happy house hunting!
