It’s hard to find an affordable home with a view in Honolulu, but this one has a lot of potential for the right person. Located at the end of Monte Street in Kalihi Valley, the house is situated up the hill from the road, so you park on the street and walk 80 steps up to the front door.
At first I wondered if that was a deterrent for buyers, but realtor Isabella Forster says the current owners bought it 38 years ago when they were expecting their third child and neither the parking nor the climb was a problem, which is why they stayed there all these years. Now in their 70s, the owners are ready to downsize to a simpler life.

The climb seems worth it: You get sweeping views from Kalihi Valley to Ke‘ehi Lagoon over a lush garden of mostly native plants. Since it’s above most of the other homes in the area, it’s very private, as well. (The land area for this is 31,799 square feet, making it a large chunk of hillside.)

The three-bedroom, two-story home has one full bath and one half bath in 1,416 square feet of living area, with an airy, open layout. The eat-in kitchen is pretty huge, with lots of counter space. The hardwood floors and fresh paint are a nice touch, as well, and Forster says there is potential to upgrade the home even further.
“The two permitted bonus rooms downstairs can also be used for everything from home office, man cave to hobby room or storage,” she says.
This home will be open on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. Click here for details.
