Open House Pick of the Week: A Gorgeous Kailua Home Designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright Student

This custom-designed home is a modern oasis, featuring a koi pond, a natural waterfall and some fruit trees.

This week’s open house pick is a great example of how timeless design never looks old. At first glance, I thought this home was a contemporary one; as it turns out, it was built in 1972.

The house was designed by Jim Charlton, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose papers are now in the library at the University of California at Santa Barbara. The original owner was a pilot and wanted it to feel like an airport control tower, which is why they have angled windows in the front. The windows are practical, too, as they maximize the mountain views and give the house a feeling of openness from inside.
 

The current owners bought the home in 2010 and have extensively remodeled it, bringing it up to current luxury home standards.  There are three bedrooms and four bathrooms in the 2,934 square feet of living area; two of the bedrooms and bathrooms are on the first floor with the playroom. One of the nice things about this home is its carbon footprint: The owners added a new seamless aluminum roof and installed a photovoltaic system so their power bill is very small. They also installed an electric car charging station for their electric car.
 

Since the 21,069-square-foot property is set in the back of a neighborhood, adjacent to preservation land, it is very private, quiet and has great mountain views. There is a natural stream running down the side of the property with a koi pond and a small natural waterfall. There are fruit trees and several garden areas amid the tropical landscaping, as well.
