The Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House is one of the landmarks on Makiki Heights, and this week’s open-house pick could easily be a part of it due to its proximity and rich history.

It was originally built in 1954 by Mrs. Richard A. Cooke Sr. (back when women were identified by their husbands) on property owned by her daughter, Anna Karen Cooke Johnson. It’s not clear why Johnson herself owned so much real estate, but her own home was previously the residence of Philip and Alice Cooke Spalding, who later built a new home next door … The Spalding House.

But back to the Cookes: They had renowned architect Albert Ely Ives design the current home in 1957. In 1985, Dudley Child, owner of Interisland Resorts (the largest Hawai‘i hotel chain of that time) bought the house and had interior designer Jack Adams renovate and reconfigure the home. The current owner updated it in recent years to give it more contemporary touches.

The single-level home is 5,179 square feet and has three bedrooms—two of which are master suites overlooking zen-like gardens and lead out to the large lānai—and 4-and-a-half bathrooms. The double master bathroom has been transformed into a stylish, state-of-the-art, virtual spa that overlooks the courtyard pool.

One wing of the home features wide-plank koa floors and the grand formal dining room has koa built-ins. Much of the original landscaping on the 12,000-square-foot property, which borders conservation land, has been retained, with new landscaping in the private courtyard. When you walk out to the expansive lānai, you get breathtaking views of the mountains and forests all the way out to Diamond Head and the ocean.

This home will be open on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. Click here for details.

Happy house hunting!
