Open house of the week: Queen Emma Gardens

I’ve always been drawn to Queen Emma Gardens for its large expanse of lawn in what's otherwise a mostly concrete neighborhood, as well as for unique touches such as its tea house party rooms.

Despite being right on the edge of Downtown and bordered by the Pali Highway, the property’s open space offers a bit of a retreat from the busy business district. It has jogging paths and a koi pond, along with a pool and barbecue area.

It’s an older building—built in 1963—but that makes it more affordable than many of the newer Chinatown condos.

For example, a one-bedroom unit on the 18th floor is listed at $324,500. If you’d like to check it out, there’s an open house in apartment 1845 from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The upgraded one-bedroom apartment has air-conditioning and bamboo laminate flooring, as well as city, ocean and Diamond Head views. Shoji doors separate the kitchen, which includes a microwave along with traditional appliances.

The apartment is located at 1519 Nuuanu Avenue #1845.

Money talk: $324,500.
