Open house of the week: Makakilo

As you’ve seen with the Pachecos’ house-hunting adventures, Oahu’s real estate inventory has made it difficult to find a nice place in Metro Honolulu if you want more space but have a set budget. Fortunately, the west side of the island is finally shaping up to be the “second city” envisioned by developers decades ago.

You won’t just find run-of-the-mill, mid-range cookie cutter homes or condos out there, either: Many townies don’t know that million-dollar homes have been a common sight for at least 10 years in Makakilo, offering luxury, space and views like their East Honolulu counterparts, but at a fraction of the cost.

Since it’s on a hill, one of the selling points, believe it or not, is a Diamond Head view. (It’s out there, past the vast coastline and ocean views.) Hey, just because it’s not in a five-mile radius doesn’t mean you can’t see it, right?
