October 2015: The Scariest Haunted House Attractions in Honolulu
Haunted houses aren’t for the faint-hearted. But if you love the thrill of a good fright, check out our guide to the scariest haunted houses around O‘ahu.
Haunted Plantation
October 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31

This year, the Haunted Plantation celebrates 10 years of scaring visitors. Wear your best running shoes to this attraction, because every year the organizers collect a pile of orphaned rubber slippers from visitors who run away screaming. We can attest this attraction is among the scariest on O‘ahu, thanks to 60 costumed actors in super-realistic horror masks and gory makeup. Not to mention, things get even spookier when you turn out the lights in a village that’s supposedly haunted by spirits (even the Ghost Hunters team made a visit). There’s nothing more frightening than wandering this creepy village at night, while horrific monsters—or who knows what—wait to jump out and scare the bejeezus out of you. This year’s theme is Obake’s Revenge, so be prepared for Japanese-inspired horror icons such as disfigured geishas and the faceless lady.
7–11 p.m., $15 general admission, $20 fast pass, 277-9923, Hawai‘i Plantation Village, 94-695 Waipahu St., hawaiihauntedplantation.com

For eight nights this month, this popular tourist attraction will transform into a haunted attraction. The creators promise the House of Nightmares will be bigger and scarier than last year’s haunted house. If you’re looking for a less frightening experience to bring the keiki, hop aboard a 20-minute train ride to hear storyteller Lopaka Kapanui share tales from the other side.
$8 for Nightmare Express, $11 for House of Nightmares, 7–11 p.m., Dole Plantation, 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway, nightmareslive.com

Be prepared to walk through a dark abandoned warehouse overrun by zombies. The Haunted Plantation creators launched this new 30-minute interactive theatrical haunted attraction. Want to make it out safely? Get ready to interact with these zombies and soldiers—you’ll need to perform certain actions and even retrieve objects. Be careful, though, you don’t want to get infected!
$20, 6:30–11:30 p.m. (a new show every 15 minutes), Ward Village, 1020 Auahi St., Building No. 3, 783-8381, theoutbreakexperience.com
Circus of the Dead Haunted House
OCTOBER 22–31
The old Sizzler’s restaurant in Moanalua transforms this month into an abandoned haunted circus. If you’re claustrophobic, stay away. This attraction will tingle all your senses. You’ll be bombarded with loud sounds, blinding lights, fog and special effects, while walking through a maze for what seems like an eternity. Be warned, there’ll be plenty of monsters jumping out at you!
$15 general admission, $25 fast pass, 7 p.m. Oct. 9-31, 330-1600, scarehawaii.com
The Revenge of Dr. Carnage and The Zombie Uprising
OCTOBER 23–31 and NOVEMBER 1

Dr. Carnage, who reputedly operates on the brains of psychotic killers, is back this year in Kaka‘ako to terrify visitors. This crazy nightmare creator preys on fears, so don’t show him you’re a scaredy cat when entering the Spinning Vortex and Claustrophobia Room. Afterwards, practice your paintball shooting skills at zombies. If you’re brave, go on Nov. 1 to walk through the two attractions in pitch dark with glowsticks.
$15 pre-sale tickets at Bookoff locations in Ala Moana and Pearlridge, all military ticket outlets, Razor Concepts, Taste Tea on Kapi‘olani and University of Hawai‘i Campus Center, 76-Kailua and online at scream808.com, open from 7 p.m. to closing, 445 Cooke St. across from Fisher Hawai‘i.
