You’re being pulled on a hayride through dark woods and twisted fields on the Gunstock Ranch. Even though you can’t see much of your surroundings in the dark, you can make out some shadowy figures and you can hear grunting sounds getting closer. It’s zombies and they’re coming after you! You can’t run or hide—you’re on a hayride, after all. Don’t be surprised if these zombies get in your face, climb aboard or even brush up against you. Just hold on to your glasses, sit tight and ride through the 25-minute zombie apocalypse.
Note: Hayrides depart every 10 minutes. Tickets are available at the door only.
$20, 7-11 p.m., 56-250 Kamehameha Highway, La‘ie, gunstockzombiehayride.com.
Haunted Plantation
OCTOBER 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31

The scariest part of this haunted attraction are the reports of paranormal activity on the Hawai‘i Plantation Village, which is an outdoor history museum during the daytime. During this time of the year at night, it turns into a haunted house known as the Haunted Plantation. You’re treated to a ghost story upon entering the village—and that’s only the beginning. You walk through a pitch dark tunnel that leads to more than a dozen homes. Beware of the 60 costumed actors who are hiding in the 10-11 homes waiting to spook you. The Oni and the Doll Maker are the star monsters. Haunted Plantation organizer Noa Laporga says two new houses will be opened for the event this year. “One of them is the Filipino house, which is known to be one of the more haunted houses in the village,” Laporga says. After entering through home after home, you’ll wonder, “Is it over yet?” Remember to watch your back, especially for the chainsaw-wielding maniac.
$15 general admission, $20 fast pass, $30 VIP front of the line access, 7-11:30 p.m., Hawai‘i Plantation Village, 94-695 Waipahu St., hawaiihauntedplantation.com.
Nightmare at Dole Plantation 2
OCTOBER 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 31

This month, the Dole Plantation transforms from a tourist destination to four Halloween attractions. If you’re afraid of clowns, stay far away from the Coulrophobia outdoor maze. Instead, try getting lost in the Trail of Terror outdoor maze. Then, hop aboard the Haunted Train, where you’ll get chicken skin listening to ghost stories from storyteller Lopaka Kapanui. The main attraction, though, is the classic haunted house, Warehouse 31: Gretchen’s Revenge. If you’re brave enough to enter the warehouse, beware of Gretchen, a creepy, psychotic doll-like woman whose goal is to “wreak havoc.”
Haunted Train ($8 presale or $10 at the door), other attractions ($11 each presale or $13 each at the door), or Gretchen’s Revenge, Trail of Terror and Coulrophobia ($30), $2 discount coupons available at Times Supermarkets, 7-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 7-10 p.m. Sundays, 64-1550 Kamehameha Hwy., hauntedhousehawaii.com.
Dr. Carnage’s House of Horrors
OCTOBER 3, 4, 10, 11, 16, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and NOVEMBER 1

If you like your haunted houses extra gruesome, check out the “house of horrors” at Windward Mall theater parking lot. Dr. Carnage reputedly operates on the brains of psychotic killers. He preys on fear, so try not to freak out when you’re entering the Tunnel of Doom, the Claustrophobia Room, and especially the Dungeon of Edward Hayes, where you’ll feel the ground move below your feet. If you’re feeling brave, go Nov. 1 for the “blackout,” when can you walk through with glow sticks in the dark.
$15 per ticket, $22 fast pass, presale tickets available at Windward Mall's Center Court and University of Hawai‘i, 808scream.com.
