The name Waikīkī means “sprouting water,” a reference to the rivers and springs that richly flowed into the area. Before there were hotels, much of the area was marsh and wetland that provided taro and fishponds to the Native Hawaiian population. Waikīkī also served as a playground for water-based activities such as surfing and paddling.
