Envisioned as Oahu’s Second City, planning for the City of Kapolei began in the 1950s. Since ground was broken in Kapolei in 1990, 12,000 single-family homes and condos have been added to create a thriving community.


The Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting estimates the number of homes in Kapolei will exceed 50,000 by the year 2035. To meet this growing need for more housing options, three planned developments are already under construction– Kapolei West, Makaiwa Hills and Ho‘opili. Collectively, these communities are expected to add 18,000 homes to Kapolei.


As Kapolei’s population is expected to grow signi­ficantly in the coming decades, the city has already established a strong foundation for growth with many business and government operations, entertainment and shopping outlets, and public health and education centers calling Kapolei home. Future development in the area includes the 26-acre Atlantis Resort at Ko Olina and completion of the Honolulu Rail Transit, which will link Kapolei to Ala Moana via elevated rail.
