Native Hawaiian Mural at Kapolei Hale

Artist Carter Black poses at home next to panels from his mural “Na Moolelo o Kapolei.” The mural, which has since been installed at Kapolei Hale, depicts stories from the area, from the arrival of Hawaiians up to modern day—90 images in all. “Kapolei can seem like a no man’s land of big-box stores, Barbers Point and miles of tract homes, but it does have this rich history,” Black says. The project took a full year to complete, including interviews with historians and local residents, and Black says it was an adventure learning how to paint at such a large scale. “You put the paint on the canvas and it starts dripping, and at first you clean it off, but then you think, hey, that looks cool.”
