This month’s all-new episode of Nā Mele on PBS Hawai‘i spotlights Taimane, a musician who continues to push the boundaries of the ‘ukulele. Now known as one of Hawai‘i’s most dynamic musical artists, Taimane started her journey at age 5 when she received her first ‘ukulele from her father. The ‘Āina Haina girl took to busking in Waikīkī, where her talent was recognized, and at just 13 years old, she performed with celebrated singer Don Ho.

After initially only playing cover songs, Taimane began experimenting with original music. “When I put something new and creative out there, I wouldn’t say I get nervous,” she says. “I think it’s more of a perspective of creating something new and innovative here with the ‘ukulele. And you know, one of my huge inspirations, Jake Shimabukuro, was one of my teachers, and just look at how he modernized the ‘ukulele. And so I already was exposed to that, so it felt very normal and open-minded to just create, but in my way.”

Despite being in the music industry for more than two decades, Taimane says her journey is far from over. “The things that I still want to accomplish with my music is to continue down the path that I’m already doing, which is touring, meeting new people through my music, but on a bigger scale. And I’m very appreciative of PBS Hawai‘i sharing my music through this way … I want to keep showing people that the ‘ukulele is more than just a toy, and you can play really weird things on it. You can express yourself through this instrument.”

And as the multi-Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winner dazzles audiences at home and around the world, even a virtuoso like Taimane remains dedicated to honing her craft. “I still have to practice. It’s still frustrating. It’s come easier, but I still have to practice.”
