Mu‘umu‘u Heaven’s Farewell Party and New Vintage Store

This boutique almost makes up for Mu‘umu‘u Heaven’s closure.

They say that when God closes a closet, he opens a dresser drawer. So as sad as we were to say farewell to some now-bygone trends (are we the only ones that miss crimping?), we know there’s something even hotter on the horizon (can’t wait for 3-D-printed trench coats to get big!).

Another bittersweet goodbye is happening just over the mountain in Kailua, where Mu‘umu‘u Heaven is celebrating its last month as a brick-and-mortar boutique. We’ll miss trolling the store’s racks for fun, retro finds and upcycled creations from owner Deb Mascia, but take comfort in knowing that Mascia and her team will be moving their stylish stock online. Don’t forget to help them go out with a bang at the Mu‘umu‘u Heaven eighth anniversary and farewell party on Feb. 21 from 5–8 p.m., where there will be some surprises and a few special guests.

OK, OK dry your eyes. It’s not all doom and gloom over on the Windward Side. Mu‘umu‘u Heaven may be calling it quits, but Mascia has got something new and special to console you. Down the street, Hana Hou Vintage opened last fall, but it’s already giving us a real reason to smile. The romantic interior itself makes us want to weep for joy: We love the vintage-style settee, collection of curios from past centuries and ornate frames straight out of a chateau. And with a cache of clothing swiped from the private stores of vintage master Mascia herself, this gem of a boutique is stuffed with everything from groovy, '70s-era, printed jumpsuits and old-school aloha wear to dramatic, flouncy gowns and cocktail dresses with a sizzling ’80s air.

See? Nothing to sniff at after all.

Hana Hou Vintage, 35 Kainehe St., 261-2100, open Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Mu‘umu‘u Heaven, 767 Kailua Road, 263-3366, will be open through Feb. 26.
