Most Wanted – August 2012

Lei Chic

August. A bittersweet month.

Sure, fall lines are now in stores and we're getting ready for boots and sweaters. But saying farewell to the golden days of summer leaves us slightly teary-eyed.

Good thing we can cheer ourselves up with bright new shopping and dining discoveries.

Because they can take away our summer, but they can't take away our freedom.

Lei Chic Christi
Style Description: Wants Michael Kors, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Phillip Lim to live in her closet (even though some of them have already come out) – Accessories addict with an urban tilt.

Lei Chic It's tough, but someone HAD to help research great dishes for our HONOLULU Magazine's Cheap Eats Giveaway. One of my favorite finds is the five-layer dip at Cafe Julia, a deeelish combination of refried, mashed taro, Big Island goat chevre, Kula romaine lettuce and tomatoes on toasted crostini. Terri and I fought over the last piece. She won.
$12, Cafe Julia at YWCA, 1040 Richards St., (808) 533-3334.

Lei Chic I'm outing Stacey. Both she and I almost became Members again when we spotted the classic '80s jacket in an online sale. Now, I'm digging Members Only's revamped cropped varsity jacket, leather finishes and even the signature bomber style in new neons. Tip: Don't go retro for retail prices. Styles are going for up to half off on Bluefly, and you can sometimes stumble across them at Nordstrom Rack. (Note: Clear the Racks is on through Monday.)

Lei Chic I'm only sharing this because I snatched up my pair already. The spiked Sam Edelman Roza pumps I couldn't quite fit my feet into at a recent discount store shoe buying binge is now on Gilt. This time, I may have to go for the T-straps.
$129, Gilt.

Lei Chic Stacey
Style Description: If Jonathan Adler and Kate Spade had a love child (okay, Simon Doonan can come along) – Preppy casual with a color explosion.

Lei Chic Okay, I know my fashion sense is not for the norm, and now with the addition of spiked accessories, my rep is definitely at stake. But, spikes (in small doses) can add just the right amount of edge to a floral frock or a plain T-shirt and jeans. I won't be wearing them with leather leggings or a sleeveless denim jacket, however, it's safe to say, juxtaposed with a classic or sweet look, these power points make winning statements.
Leather collar, $25.55, ASOS; headband, $18, Basique Threads, Ward Warehouse, (808) 597-1720; friendship bracelet, $39, Bamboo Sky, 401 Kamakee St., (808) 591-8003.

Lei Chic Dilan has an attraction – or obsession – with glittery fashions. Sometimes her mix-n-match sparkly selections smack you in the face and jump the fence to Tackyville. Then I have to play the bad guy and shut down her shining armor. Luckily, with these ballet flats (in the must-have hue of the season!), we find a compromise. Now, she can be her own twinkling star with just a glint of drama.
$59.50, J.Crew, Ala Moana Center, (808) 949-5252.

Lei Chic I admit, I jumped on the kale bandwagon a few years ago, and have it fried, blended and straight up with a lemon vinaigrette. Now, MOR's Kale & Watercress Emporium soap is making me love this leafy friend even more. The hint of spice from the watercress mixed with a light herbaceous kick of kale is refreshingly enjoyable; it's not overpowering and won't having you smelling like grass roots. Plus it's paraben-free, loaded with Vitamin E and not tested on animals – just another reason to veg out.
$14.95, Owens & Co., 1152 Nuuanu Ave., (808) 531-4300.

Lei Chic Terri
Style Description: Classic, clean lines à la Kate Middleton with a pop of Rachel Zoe. Constant quest for the perfect fitted jacket and heels.

Lei Chic Those who know me (or have seen my Twitter or Instagram) know that I'm obsessed with desserts. This little beauty has become one of my favorites. One bite of its rich, creamy bacon cheesecake with addictive cocoa graham cracker crust and gooey maple drizzle, and I was in sweet, sweet heaven. I finished it in two seconds flat and promptly ordered another one.
$5, REAL a Gastropub, 1020 Auahi St., (808) 596-2526.

I lost my phone case last month and ran into trouble finding a replacement since my Droid Razr is such an odd size. On a recent visit to Owens & Co., I spotted some leather sunglasses cases and a light went off. I emailed the designer, Nele Henderson, sent her my dimensions and color preferences, and the very next day she delivered a customized pouch with fun, printed lining that fit my phone perfectly.
$22, Nele K.

Lei Chic I saw these necklaces draped on the edge of a mirror at La Muse and instantly fell in love. The braided metallic chains, which also come in rose gold, silver and charcoal, exude elegance, while the intricate knot adds a rustic touch, making this necklace a truly versatile piece.
$39, La Muse, 1156 Nuuanu Ave., (808) 536-0818.
