Makaha lot of opportunity

The late Rell Sunn, Queen of Makaha, lived on Widemann St. until she passed away in 1998. It’s easy to see why: It’s just across the street from access to a secluded little beach, like having your own private surf paradise.

This 10,000-square-foot lot on the same street is now available, perfect for people wanting a surfer’s lifestyle with lots of beach time in a quiet neighborhood. It’s an older, well-established area, the middle of three “beach loop” neighborhoods in Makaha. (Click here for a video that illustrates its location.)

The catch? The 896-square foot home on the lot is almost 70 years old, barely salvageable. Since it’s so old, realtor Isabella Forster has it listed both as a single family home and as vacant land.
“Many of the lots in these beach loops have been rebuilt with beautiful, million-dollar-plus properties,” Forster explains. “Given that ocean front property is a commodity in Hawaii, this is one of the last areas where you can buy ‘affordable’ properties close to the ocean.”

Despite the distance to town, the area is definitely shifting, with developments like Mauna Olu and other high-end properties popping up. Forster says it’s more of an opportunity than a property, and at the moment is an idyllic spot that is rarely found in other parts of Oahu.
“It’s a bit like being on another island,” Forster says.
