Hawaii’s first Microsoft retail store opens tomorrow with a bang—a free Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Neon Trees show.
Microsoft’s 39th retail store opens 11 a.m. tomorrow at Ala Moana Center, next to Bath & Body Works. Music stars Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Neon Trees won't be at the store, but Microsoft representatives will be handing out free tickets to their performance, which takes place that night at Kakaako Waterfront Park.
You probably won't score a ticket if you're planning to show up the morning of the grand opening ceremonies. You'll have to start camping out at Ala Moana Center garage mall level 2 (mauka side) starting at 10 p.m. tonight until the store opens tomorrow morning. Think Black Friday.
The first 200 people in line will get two free tickets (one is a pass to the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Neon Trees concert at Kakaako Waterfront Park, the other grants meet and greet with Neon Trees after the show). The next 2,500 people will get two tickets to the concert each, but no meet and greet with the stars.
It's not the first time Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be performing in Hawaii (they made their Honolulu debut New Year's Eve last year at The Republik). The Seattle hip hop group's popular singles “Thrift Shop” and "Can't Hold Us" topped No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Our grand opening activities are a way to celebrate with our customers and introduce the local community to Microsoft and all that we have to offer," says Microsoft store manager Noelle Neverdon in an email. "We chose Neon Trees + Macklemore & Ryan Lewis because these artists are popular in this market, and we wanted to create a grand opening celebration that our customers would enjoy, from entertainment to shopping at the store.”
Aside from the entertainment lineup tomorrow, in the morning Microsoft representatives will be presenting $1 million in software grants to Palama Settlement, Girl Scouts of Hawaii, Hawaii Community Foundation, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii and YMCA of Honolulu.
