Long Drivers Competition at Olomana Golf Links

Think you've got a good long shot? Why not take all those mini competitions you have with your friends on the course or the driving range and put them to good use.
Considered the home run derby of golf, The RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship is giving the public a chance to pit their golf driving power against the best in the world. This is an open competition; qualifying rounds are being held at Olomana Golf Links in Waimanalo, May 18, June 15 and July 13. Divisions include an Open Division (18-44) and Senior Division (44-plus).
Winners of the qualifying rounds will advance to the regionals held Aug. 10 at Olomana Golf Links. Regional winners will then compete in the RE/MAX WLDC in Mesquite, Nevada in September. The top eight regional winners advance to the championship round featured on The Golf Channel, with the Open Division champion receiving $250,000 and Senior Division champion expecting to receive $70,000.
“The long drive competition opens up the game to those that want to experience a major championship, a World Championship, where otherwise they would not have the chance to do so,” says Long Drivers of America event coordinator Rod Moruss.
Seeking to help the Hawaii golf community, Olomana Golf Links site director Les Muramoto has worked to include Hawaii as a qualifying and regional competition location for the past 11 years.
“I wanted to help the Hawaii competitors, so they don’t have to fly back and forth between here and the Mainland. We hold our own as far as being a small state. We have more competitors than other Mainland states combined,” says Les Muramoto.
There are also ‘Buy-In Divisions’, which include Super Senior (50-plus), Grand Champions (55-plus), Legends (60-plus), Masters (65-plus) and Ladies. Competitors in these five buy-in divisions do not have to qualify, they pay an $800 entry fee and are automatically included in the RE/MAX WLDC.
