Living green in Hawaii Kai

Realtor James Davis was quite resourceful when he remodeled his Hawaii Kai home last year, while trying to reduce hiscarbon footprint. Now that it’s for sale, he’s hoping the new owner will be able to “live green” effortlessly. (Click here for details.)

The 1440-square-foot home has various eco-friendly touches including bamboo flooring, Low-E double-paned glass, and a tankless water heater. (He even reused a sliding door opening from a home he took down in Kailua.) The home has no air conditioning because it’s already laid out for natural, open air flow and the tree canopy covers the roof to keep it cool year-round.

“It also helps that it’s located on the cool side of the valley,” Davis says.

There are four bedrooms and three full baths, one of which features an outdoor bamboo shower, featuring ohia postswith wrapped copper pipes and smooth river-stone tile. The remodeled kitchen has granite from the Trump Waikiki’s material supplier, a wine chiller, stainless steel appliances and new cabinets.

Since the lot is a sprawling 9,132 square feet, there’s even an outdoor trellis off the master bedroom with ironwood tree columns and stairs leading to the back deck. There are actually four decks and lanais to give the option of indoor-outdoor living.

It might be appropriate to take a look at this house this month—April is Earth Month, after all.
